    Summer Reading Program

Reading several books over the summer has the potential to prevent a decline in reading achievement. Families can help to avoid a loss of skills over the summer by encouraging children to read in their free time and by modeling reading at home. Children that see adults in their lives reading often tend to read more themselves.  Please see below for details about the summer reading program for the grade level your child will enter in September.

Middle School Reading - Required Reading for Grades 6-8

Students entering grades 6-8 are to read one book from the required book list and two or more self-selected books. The current 6th and 7th graders can check out up to 15 books from the RMS Library Media Center as part of the Summer Checkout Program. Please see this permission slip for details. Books may be purchased from a local bookstore or borrowed through MackinVia, the Hunterdon County Library, or sites such as Project Gutenburg. MackinVia can be accessed through Clever.

    Elementary Summer Reading

Research shows that children who read during summer break not only prevent the "summer slide" in reading skills, but often show steady or increased achievement. When children choose books that interest them, they're more likely to develop a lifelong love of reading while maintaining their current reading levels.

Help your child thrive this summer by making reading a regular part of their daily routine. Just 20-30 minutes of self-selected reading each day can make a significant difference in their academic success.
